Capability 1 - Beat and route planning
What it does. Builds and optimises which outlets, customers, or sites the field employee covers on which day, against frequency norms, geography, and priority - and adapts when something changes. What it fixes. Wasted travel and uneven coverage. What breaks without it. The beat is a static spreadsheet list someone made months ago; priority outlets get under-covered, field time leaks into unplanned travel, and nobody can see whether coverage matches intent.
Capability 2 - Attendance and check-in
What it does. Records the field day and outlet or site check-in fast and frictionlessly, working even when connectivity is poor. What it fixes. The slow GPS handshake that wastes field time. What breaks without it - or with a heavy version of it. The employee learns to punch check-in from the roadside because doing it inside the outlet costs too much time, and the location data becomes meaningless.
Capability 3 - Visit and order capture
What it does. Captures the order, stock, merchandising, competitor activity, and site condition fast, offline-tolerant, and auto-filled from history and master data. What it fixes. Slow, from-memory, end-of-day data entry. What breaks without it. Orders are rounded and approximate, the competitor field is blank, and the field data the business depends on is unreliable from the moment it is born.
Capability 4 - Service task execution
What it does. Carries the task, customer and asset history, checklist, parts information, and proof-of-completion capture for service field forces. What it fixes. Technicians arriving unprepared and closing jobs through a separate evening of paperwork. What breaks without it. Service visits run on phone calls and memory, completion data is late and incomplete, and the customer experience varies by which technician showed up.
Capability 5 - Expense and reimbursement
What it does. Captures travel, fuel, lodging, and allowance claims in the field, routes them for approval automatically, and shortens the reimbursement cycle. What it fixes. Slow reimbursement that the field workforce resents. What breaks without it. Field employees carry company expenses on their own money for weeks, and the frustration becomes a quiet driver of attrition.
Capability 6 - In-field knowledge access
What it does. Puts current pricing, scheme details, product information, stock availability, and policy answers in the field employee's hand, in their language, in the moment. What it fixes. The 'let me check and get back to you' that loses the order. What breaks without it. The field employee guesses, or calls a manager, or loses the moment - and customer questions go unanswered at the counter where they could have closed a sale.
Capability 7 - Performance visibility for the field employee
What it does. Shows the field employee their own coverage, throughput, and standing against target - the same data the manager sees, not a separate secret system. What it fixes. A field employee working blind to their own numbers. What breaks without it. Performance is something done to the field employee in a monthly review rather than something they can see and manage daily.
Why all seven matter together
Beat planning without fast capture means the employee reaches the right outlet and then loses time logging the visit. Fast capture without in-field knowledge means the employee records the order but cannot answer the question that would have made it bigger. Performance visibility without the other six is a scoreboard with no way to move the score. The capabilities form an enabling layer; built as a unified whole, they make the field day genuinely more productive. Built as a partial set - typically just the tracking-flavoured ones, attendance and check-in and visit count - they reproduce the tracking system the company was trying to move past.
